- V.FC, or V.Fast Class, is a 28800 bps protocol developed by Rockwell and Hayes
- in the days before V.34 (the 'standard' 28.8 modulation) and implemented only
- by two companies: Rockwell (who supply data pumps - modulation chipsets - to a
- long list of manufacturers including Hayes/Practical Peripherals, Microcom,
- GVC, Supra, Zoom, Boca, and others) and, later, USRobotics (who did it without
- using the Rockwell chipset). It uses many of the technologies that went into
- V.34, but it is not compatible with V.34.
-
- It gained wide acceptance because it hit the market long before V.34, it was
- faster than most other pre-V.34 protocols (such as USRobotics' 16800 bps HST,
- ZyXEL's 16800 bps and 19200 bps V.32bis extensions, AT&T's 19200 bps
- V.32terbo, and USRobotics' 21600 bps V.32terbo extension) and it was cheaper
- than AT&T Paradyne or Motorola CODEX' pre-V.34 modems.
-
- Rockwell promised that their V.34/V.FC 'dual standard' chipset (on which many
- current V.34 modems are based) would have the same pinout as the V.FC chipset,
- so many early V.FC adopters were able to upgrade their V.FC modems to the
- standard modulation at a reasonable cost. I have performed this upgrade on
- Hayes Optima 28.8 modems.
-
- There are pros and cons to V.FC vs. V.34, but the bottom line is that V.34 is
- _the_ standard, and a V.FC only modem will not make a 28.8 connect to modems
- manufactured by AT&T Paradyne, Motorola, ZyXEL, Telebit, Multi-Tech, Penril,
- CXR, Zypcom, etc.
-
- Look for "V.34".
